How It All Started:
After working for his father and grandfather as a youth in their nurseries in Southern California during the 1940's and 1950's, Bob Tyler married his wife Marie in 1957 and together they moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. After finding nothing available in the nursery industry, Bob took a job as a salesmen for a stationary company. It was at this time he met the bookkeeper for Carlmont Nursery, who just happen to be one of his clients.
In April of 1960 he received a call from the owner of Carlmont Nursery where he was hired to work 6 days a week for $2.35 per hour. A year later he asked the owner if he could become a partner and was told he could never afford it.
Because Bob lived on a large property in San Bruno, he decided to grow his own plants and shortly had an inventory of over 8000 plants. He asked the Bank of America for a loan and they accepted, using the plants as collateral!
On September 10th, 1962 Bob purchased the nursery, which at the time had gross annual sales of $35,000.00. In the forty-three years since then the nursery has tripled in physical size and is thriving as one of the premier Japanese Maple and Bamboo sources for the San Francisco Bay Area.
